2030 Districts Network: Michigan Clean Energy On The Rise

Blank 1400 x 400

There are countless organizations and programs out there that promote sustainability and renewable energy in cities, homes and businesses. The 2030 Districts is one such nonprofit organization that strives to, “establish a global network of thriving high performance building districts and cities, uniting communities to catalyze transformation in the built environment and the role it plays in mitigating and adapting to climate change.”

Every community that is a part of a 2030 District commits to reduce their energy, water and transportation emissions by 50% by 2030. Over 20 cities across the U.S. have already committed, including Ann Arbor, Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Ann Arbor has committed 2 million square feet to reduce emissions by 50% of current buildings and infrastructures and new buildings and renovations. Detroit has committed 24 million and Grand Rapids 16 million square feet.

Detroit Focus:

Willy's Overland Loft Solar Project

Detroit joined the network in 2017 and since then has incorporated 1,465 buildings to reduce emissions. One of these buildings is Willy’s Overland Lofts, a residential apartment building that chose Michigan Solar Solutions to help reduce their electricity usage. In 2018, we installed solar panels to offset 50% of common area electricity while preventing over 70 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Learn more about this project.

Through the 2030 Districts Network, Detroit has formed the Detroit Energy Challenge which recognizes city building developers who had the greatest energy reductions from the prior years’ baseline. The first annual ceremony is being held in 2021.

Cities across the nation are continuing to join the 2030 Districts Network, stimulating sustainability one community at a time. Michigan is proud to have three major cities in the network, helping our state go green and utilize clean energy. Is your community next? See how to become a district.
