FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO TREMENDOUS GROWTH: MICHIGAN SOLAR SOLUTIONS’ STEADY GROWTH AND EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION
Michigan Solar Solutions (MSS) was founded in 2007 by Mark Hagerty. In 2018, the company had 23 employees; today, it has grown to more than 60. To increase camaraderie, MSS started hosting a yearly employee appreciation barbecue in the summer, providing a day of fun and relaxation to celebrate the hard work of the team.

Managing Tremendous Growth at MSS
Mark Hagerty describes the company’s growth as “tremendous.” He elaborates, “At times, we have had to throttle back so we could maintain the quality we are known for. After growing more than 300 percent in two years, we had to slow down.”
This rapid growth led to some struggles, prompting MSS to look internally for solutions.
Strategic Internal Improvements at MSS
“We canceled all proactive marketing and sales efforts in January 2023. We used this time to build out our company management software system, put 11 of our managers through Six Sigma training, and implemented robust inventory and HR management software.”
These steps have enabled MSS to start 2024 with the ability and confidence to deliver the quality they are known for.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Forward
Over the 17 years MSS has been in business, Mark Hagerty reflects on the challenges faced:
“Utility company lobbies, material supply issues, inconsistent government policies, and much larger companies entering the Michigan market have all caused us to question if we would ever get to where we are now. There were several times when it would have been very easy to simply throw in the towel and quit. But failure was never an option.”
Through Mark’s determination and the dedication of the MSS team, the company has been able to grow immensely and serve both homeowners and businesses in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
P.S. It’s not an optical illusion — our building did grow. We extended our Riverdale offices to accommodate our staff, and eventually, we will have a solar showroom.
