In the summer of 2024, Michigan Solar Solutions (MSS) partnered with Four Corners Coffee to design, engineer, and install a custom roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Located in the historic Somerset General Store in Somerset, Michigan, Four Corners Coffee has built a reputation for serving some of the best coffee in the region. Committed to sustainability, the coffee shop sought to integrate renewable energy into its operations to align with its environmental values while also managing rising operational costs.
To turn their solar vision into reality, Four Corners Coffee successfully secured a grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). This recognition underscored their commitment to a more sustainable future and provided financial support to help bring the project to life.
MSS designed a dual-tilt ballasted solar array featuring east- and west-facing panels. This configuration was strategically engineered to optimize energy production throughout the day, aligning with the coffee shop’s electricity consumption patterns. The system is expected to generate approximately 13,527 kWh of clean energy in its first year, offsetting around 10.3 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions—equivalent to preventing the consumption of 11,474 gallons of gasoline.
By transitioning to solar energy, Four Corners Coffee is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also stabilizing its energy costs in an era of rising electricity rates. This project exemplifies how small businesses can leverage renewable energy solutions to enhance sustainability while achieving financial benefits.
