Project Overview: Oakland University Installation
Location: Rochester, MI
Systems Deployed: 99 kWdc / 75 kWac
Estimated year 1 generation: 112,076 kWh

In Fall 2024, Michigan Solar Solutions (MSS) partnered with Oakland University to design, engineer, and install a custom ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Situated on its historic campus in Rochester, Michigan, Oakland University is recognized for its strong programs in business, engineering, and health sciences, as well as its industry partnerships throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. Committed to research, hands-on learning, and student success, the university sought to integrate renewable energy into its operations—advancing its sustainability goals while mitigating rising energy costs.
The financial feasibility of this project was largely enabled by the Elective Pay provision under the Section 48E Energy Investment Tax Credit, introduced through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022. This provision allowed tax-exempt institutions like Oakland University to directly benefit from federal clean energy incentives.
MSS designed a fixed-tilt, driven-pile ground mount system featuring solar panels assembled in the United States. Engineered to maximize energy production throughout the day, the system aligns with the university’s electricity consumption patterns, enhancing efficiency and cost savings. In its first year, the system is projected to generate 112,076 kWh of clean energy, offsetting approximately 75.3 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions—equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 1,245 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.
By adopting solar energy, Oakland University is not only reducing its environmental impact but also securing long-term energy cost stability amid fluctuating electricity rates. This project demonstrates how non-profit institutions can leverage renewable energy to enhance sustainability while achieving financial benefits.
MSS is proud to support Oakland University on its renewable energy journey. Go Grizzlies!
