Solar & Battery Storage for the Village of Peck

The Village of Peck, a small Michigan municipality, was awarded grant funding to transition its Department of Public Works (DPW) facility to solar energy. With a goal of making the most of its available funding, the Village pursued a cost-effective solar and battery storage solution designed to reduce its reliance on the utility while supporting the facility’s long-term energy needs.

Michigan Solar Solutions partnered with the Village of Peck to develop a solar and storage system that addresses both energy costs and operational resiliency. The project combines a rooftop solar array with battery energy storage, allowing the DPW facility to generate and store its own electricity.

Michigan Solar Solutions Designs a Solar & Storage System

Michigan Solar Solutions installed a 17.2 kW DC rooftop solar array at the Village of Peck’s DPW facility. The system is estimated to produce 18,714 kWh of electricity during its first year, helping offset the facility’s ongoing electricity consumption and reduce long-term operating expenses.

The project also includes a 40 kWh battery energy storage system. By pairing solar generation with battery storage, the facility can store energy for use when it is needed and reduce its dependence on electricity from the utility.

Battery Storage Supports Facility Resiliency

For a municipal Department of Public Works facility, maintaining access to electricity can be important during grid outages. The Village of Peck’s battery storage system provides an additional layer of energy resilience, helping support continued facility operations when utility power is interrupted.

The combination of rooftop solar and battery storage gives the Village a more comprehensive energy solution than solar alone. Solar panels generate electricity, while the battery provides a way to store that energy and make it available when needed.

Maximizing Grant Funding Through Solar Energy

The Village of Peck’s project demonstrates how grant funding can be used to make strategic investments in municipal infrastructure. By implementing a right-sized solar and storage system, the Village can use its funding to address immediate energy needs while creating long-term value for the community.

The system is also expected to provide environmental benefits over its lifetime. Over 20 years, the project is estimated to offset 14.3 metric tons of carbon dioxide, contributing to the Village’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its energy use.

Through the combination of solar generation, battery storage, and grant funding, the Village of Peck is taking a practical step toward lower operating expenses, reduced utility reliance, and greater energy resiliency for its Department of Public Works facility.
